Why Bentendo?
We wanted to create a place where people in Vancouver could enjoy Japanese food without making it a special occasion. Japanese food can be simple, comforting, affordable and fun — and it shouldn't take a special trip to get to it.
We also wanted to move past the idea that bento has to mean a cold, pre-made meal. At Bentendo we bring together Japanese flavors, familiar comfort food and a modern way of eating, all in one box.
Our menu is designed to be approachable, our prices are designed for everyday dining, and our food is made to be enjoyed without overthinking it.
What makes it different
You may already know bento from Japanese supermarkets and grocery aisles. Bentendo is a little different. Our boxes are prepared in our own kitchen and served as a complete meal — warm rice, a main cooked to order, and carefully chosen sides.
We wanted something in between everyday takeout and a sit-down restaurant: easy enough for a quick lunch, good enough to look forward to.
Made fresh, made to order
We don't want Bentendo to feel like picking a box off a shelf. Steak is grilled, roast beef is sliced, katsu is fried and each box is finished after your order comes in.

Bentendo is inspired by Japan, but it is made for Vancouver. We love the flavors, ingredients and food culture we grew up with. At the same time, Vancouver has its own tastes, habits and way of enjoying food.
So we don't think Japanese food needs to stay in one box. Sometimes it's traditional. Sometimes it's familiar. Sometimes it's something completely new. That's what makes Bentendo ours.

We created Bentendo because we wanted Japanese food to feel a little more approachable. Something you can grab on a busy weekday. Something you can enjoy after work, take back to your hotel, or share with a friend.
We hope Bentendo becomes one of those places you don't need a reason to visit. Just a craving.
